The week after the conference at Augadulce, I visted the Instituto Nacional
de Meteorologia (INM) which is located
in Madrid on the campus of la Universidad
de Madrid Computense. On a visit there about 8 years earlier, I had
stayed a week as their guest collaborating on research on flash floods
and quasigeostrophic analysis. This time Angel Rivera Perez arranged for
me to meet with the new director of the INM. Afterward, he arranged for
me to meet with the subdirectors to whom I made a presentation about the
GAINS (or Shear-Directed
Ballon) project. The presentation sparked enthusiasm and interest among
the group, and they asked many questions.
After the meeting with the subdirectors of the INM, I spent the remainder
of the day with Ricardo Riosalido and his group. Prediction of flash floods
along the Mediterranean coast continues to be an important task of Ricado's
group. However, they now work with UNIX workstations, whereas on my former
visit we did most of our work of post-procesing on personal computers.
